In her colorful sari and large scarlet bindi, Dr. Vandana Shiva is an arresting presence: she galvanizes crowds, advises government leaders, fields calls from the media—then retreats from the big-city buzz to work side by side with small farmers around the globe. She played a key role in the Indian farmer protests in the 1990s –which happened again in 2021—and she shined a light on the hundreds of thousands of suicides by farmers who could no longer afford Monsanto’s seeds or chemicals. How did this woman from an obscure town in India become Monsanto’s worst nightmare, a rebellious rock star in the global debate about who feeds the world? This film tells Vandana’s story for the first time, how she rose to prominence in the food justice movement to inspire an international crusade for change, and how a stubborn woman of color has taken on white, Western patriarchy and is winning.
