An Urban Herd explores Street Goat, a farming cooperative which raises goats on disused land around Bristol. New recruit Fern wants to access local, sustainable milk while living in a city. To become a member, Fern must learn to milk the goats entirely by herself. She embarks on this challenge with the guidance of experienced milker Guru, and discovers it isn’t easy to become an urban goat farmer.

Street Goat is the only project of its kind in the UK. While Fern is attracted by the close relationship with where her food comes from, Guru welcomes how the connection with nature and the community of over 50 volunteers provides a break from busy city life.

Street Goat proves traditional smallholder farming has a viable place in the heart of our cities. And for Fern, learning to milk a goat is a challenge worth conquering to join this urban herd.
