A bull elephant seal returns to the island of South Georgia to reclaim his harem. But the opposition is fierce - to be successful he’ll have to do battle with younger, stronger bulls. Can he use his experience to make the most of his time in the sun?

In the hills above, a giant chick is preparing for take-off. It won’t be easy. Wandering albatrosses are the largest flying birds in the world, with an 11-foot wingspan - controlling her enormous wings takes a huge amount of practice.

Out at sea, humpback whales are completing one of the longest migrations on Earth. They’ve travelled to Antarctic waters to feast on krill, but it’s hard to gather enough of these finger-long crustaceans to fill an animal the size of a bus - so they employ ingenious methods, one filmed for the first time.

Along the ice edge, an enormous leopard seal gorges on a glut of penguins.
