NASA
Film "Explorer Mindset: Citizen Science" by National Geographic Society's Impact Story Lab
For nearly 50 years, NASA satellites have captured images of Earth’s land allowing us to study how it is used, how it changes over time, and what areas need protection. But 70% of Earth is covered in water, and the ocean floor remains largely unmapped. To help close this knowledge gap, Dr. Ved Chirayath, professor, National Geographic Explorer, and former NASA engineer is starting to map Earth’s underwater surfaces beginning with coral reefs. In an effort to leverage the power and efficiency of citizen science, Ved has also invented a computer game called NeMO-Net where global citizen scientists as young as 10 years old can help refine his coral reef data. Over a million players have contributed to the project, exponentially increasing the quantity of ocean data and, quite literally, changing the game for machine learning.
