Nova Scotian filmmaker Lynda Medjuck Suissa’s documentary feature, Sheitel – Beauty in the Hidden, explores the cultural, religious, and personal significance of hair covering among Jewish women within Orthodox and Hasidic communities. Through intimate interviews and access to communities in Halifax, Toronto, Montreal, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and Jerusalem, the documentary offers an insightful exploration of the traditions and contemporary practices surrounding head coverings. It traces the historical and spiritual roots of hair covering for married women in Judaism, its evolving interpretations, the craftsmanship and personal styling involved, as well as the misconceptions often held by those outside these communities. Sheitel – Beauty in the Hidden provides a nuanced, engaging, and accessible portrait of a tradition that is often viewed through the lens of misconception, inviting viewers to look beyond outward appearances and cultural differences to better understand the women, traditions, and stories behind it.
