Fully living up to its bold and irreverent title, director Winston DeGiobbi’s sophomore feature offers a self-assured yet unsettling glimpse into the lives of a collection of lovers, friends, and family members in small-town Cape Breton. The central tension in the film lies between Molly, played by the kinesthetically fascinating Deragh Campbell (Matt and Mara), and the community she left behind for a porn career in Toronto. Despite her attempts to interface with home and her sometime-boyfriend Sunshine, she struggles mightily to connect to her former life and is ultimately repulsed by it. Halifax-based filmmaker DeGiobbi continues his exploration of male sexuality and how it coexists (or fails to) with vulnerability, competition, and violence. Imagery of hooflike stilts, pastel company houses, and dreamy nocturnal writhings accumulate throughout, interspersed with mesmerizing home-video footage. Without explanation and without apology, this is auteur filmmaking at its most uncompromising, and a version of Cape Breton - and life - that is strange and new.
