In a snow-blanketed Polish village during WWII, a poor woodcutter and his wife, unable to have children, see their quiet lives upended when a baby is thrown from a train bound for Auschwitz. Viewing the child as a gift from God, the woman vows to raise it—despite her husband’s initial resistance and the mounting antisemitism of their neighbors. Her courage reveals both the depths of human compassion and the devastating cost of hatred. From Michel Hazanavicius, director of The Artist, which won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor.
