With the beginning of the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Turks, fearing the unrest would spread to Cyprus, arrested the island’s prominent citizens and executed them. National martyr Kyprianos was hanged on July 9, 1821, at Seragiou Square in Nicosia.

The annihilation of the Cypriot leadership, massacre of nobles and clergymen and the confiscation of property did not discourage Cypriot Hellenism. Cypriot volunteers crossed over to Greece and fought to end the Turkish yoke. Over a thousand Cypriot fighters participated in the Greek Revolution. There are also historical references to the formation of a Cypriot company, whose battle flag is preserved at the National and Historical Museum in Athens.

The Greek Revolution and the sacrifice of Archbishop Kyprianos became a turning point in the history of Cyprus and in the consciousness of the Christians of the island about their Hellenistic roots, which fuelled freedom struggles and the endeavour for unification with Greece.
