The Melkonian Educational Institute is located approximately three kilometres south of the walled city of Nicosia, on the borders of the Municipality of Aglantzia. The institute was built after the Armenian Genocide (1915-1920) to house and educate orphans belonging to the Armenian community from around the world. This documentary highlights both the contribution of the Melkonian Educational Institute to the Armenian community and its significance in the Cypriot society. The institute reflects values from the historical, architectural, aesthetic, technological and cultural perspectives that contributed to its declaration as a listed building. However, this declaration did not prove enough for the institute’s protection. Almost 100 years after its construction, the building now stands abandoned, in a dilapidated state, with an uncertain future.
