A sound travel across the forest of Talamanca, triggering the extraordinary in the ordinary universe of Justo, BriBri farmer, father and adventurer. It is the blow of the here and the now, the quintessence of what surrounds expanding imaginative materialities out of Earth’s liveliness and indigenous worldly epic. A film on the BriBri present in Talamanca, on its restless awakening and its companion wonders.

TALAMANCA

It may be tempting to dismiss the existence of Gods as no one ever gets to see them. And yet, it’s impossible to question their power once you witness the invocation rituals practiced by the Hindus…A fire offering of herbs and spices fills the temple with intoxicating scent. The medium slowly raises, carrying on his head the sacred kumbam, a ritual pot filled with the nectar of immortality. The ceremony can begin.Attuning to the hypnotic sound of drums, the devotees begin to fall in trance, with their bodies instantly inhabited by divine powers. Mere vessels of their Gods, they stick out their tongues, demand a cigar, spin in a dance of craze… The godly presence is so palpable, emotions run high with the followers screaming, fainting, bursting into uncontrollable laughter. And as the ecstasy reaches its zenith, the worshippers offer their skin to be pierced with hooks and lances as a sacrifice of flesh and blood, run barefoot over glowing ash. All to prove to the Gods their devotion! As a thank you for past blessings and a heartfelt prayer that whatever their desire the most may come true.

THE POWER OF GODS

The bond between a spiritual teacher and his followers transcends time and space. And with Buddhism embracing suffering and death as a natural part of the worldly existence, and celebrating cremation as a rite of passage that may end the painful cycle of death and rebirth and open the doors to Nirvana - there is no space for tears…Instead, bidding a farewell to a beloved master, watching his mummified body go up in ritual flames becomes the teacher’s final lecture: an opportunity to love without attachment, to embrace the impermanence of the here and now and to come to terms with one’s own mortality that ceases to be an abstract concept the moment you hold in your hands the bones of a beloved person.

RITE OF PASSAGE

The panamerican road construction that links Chile from North to South, stumbles with the biggest archaeological site of the Coquimbo region: El Olivar, a 40 hectares native settlement which houses numerous prehistoric tombs from different cultures, among them, the peak of the Diaguita culture. The Diaguitas (800 - 1536 a.C.), studied by archaeologists since 1920 onwards, and well-known for their sophisticated pottery and geometric patterns, reveals more than 700 years of chilean prehistoric times and their connection to the territory, discovering this time, a profound conception about time and death.

THE ART OF TIME

In Byzantine art, the artist captures what is beyond the senses, encapsulates the essence of the transcendent and this is achieved with various artistic features that are presented in this documentary. The types of the Byzantine temples are also mentioned. Through a historical throwback, important churches, and murals of Cyprus are presented along with their own artistic features. Apart from the murals, there is a discussion around Byzantine art in portable icons, metalwork and wood carving. At the end of the documentary, we revisit murals once again, showcasing examples of murals from the 15th century onwards, such as those from the church of Timios Stavrou (Holy Cross) in Pelendri, the church of Stavros tou Agiasmati (Cross of Agiasmati) in Platanistasa and Agios Mamas in Louvaras with their renaissance features, the Metamorphosis tou Sotiros Church (Transfiguration of the Saviour) in Palaichori and the Agios Neophytos monastery with Palaiologan artistic features. The influence of renaissance art is also apparent in Panagia tis Podithou (Holy Mary of Podithou) and in the Latin chapel in Kalopanagiotis.

THE BYZANTINE ART IN CYPRUS

Heroes Don't Know They're Heroes! Nail V. documentary is a visual story of Nail Vahdeti Çakırhan, a very inspirational character who lived an extraordinary life. He was a poet, a revolutionist, a journalist, a politician, a political convict, an award-winning self-thought architect and a thinker. His life is an astonishing example for showing that an idea, an ideology is an act of life not just an act of speech. Virtue and courage are the constructive values of humanity. Not money, not selling, not owning... This documentary mirrors those values through Nail Çakırhan’s being.

Horror in the Andes is a behind-the-scenes documentary that follows the process of making a horror movie in Ayacucho, Peru. Directed by audio-visual anthropologist Martha-Cecilia Dietrich, it explores how Andean filmmakers use the horror genre as a means to revive stories of a pre-colonial past. Appropriating a global cinematic language to tell local (hi)stories of violent pasts, our attention is drawn to contemporary social issues like ethnicity and gender. Infused with warmth and affection, Horror in the Andes pays testament to the craft of filmmaking and its community.
