Almost 450 years have passed since the completion of the walls of Nicosia, among the most characteristic fortifications of the 16th century and the Renaissance period. When the Venetians took control of Cyprus in 1489, they immediately realized that the Frankish fortifications were ineffective and outdated. In the mid-16th century, the Ottoman Empire was a great threat, so the Venetians decided to quickly take defensive measures, despite the high cost of the construction. The cost was estimated at 120,000 ducats and approximately 6.000 men and women worked tirelessly day and night for the completion of the walls. However, the attempts of the civilians for enhanced security failed. The city was occupied after a 50-day siege. The new governors maintained and made good use of the walls, which defined the structure and span of the city for the next four centuries. Today, the walls continue to stand as silent witnesses of the past, enclosing the soul of the city, separating the traditional from the modern.

Yüzyılın ve Rönesans döneminin en karakteristik şehir duvarlarından biri olan Lefkoşa surlarının tamamlanmasının üzerinden yaklaşık 450 yıl geçti. 1489’da Venedikliler Kıbrıs’ı ele geçirdiklerinde Frenkler’den kalan surların fazla bir işlevinin kalmadığını fark etmişlerdi ve 16. Yüzyılda Osmanlı İmparatorluğu büyük bir tehditti. Bu nedenle Venedikliler inşaatın bedeli ne olursa olsun bir an önce şehre yeni bir sur yapmaları gerektiğine karar verdiler. Tahminen 12.000 Duka’ya mal olan surların inşaatında 6.000 kadın ve erkek işçi gece gündüz demeden çalıştı. Maalesef bu güvenlik önlemi alma girişimi hüsranla sonuçlandı. Şehir 50 günlük bir ablukanın ardından düştü. Şehrin yeni sahipleri surları onardı ve Lefkoşa’nın sınırlarını sonraki dört yüzyıl boyunca belirleyen biryapı haline getirdi. Bugün bu surlar, geçmişin sessiz tanıkları olarak, şehrin ruhunu çerçeveliyor ve yeni ile eski arasına bir çizgi çekiyor.
