LA CAVA CASTLE

Expired February 28, 2022 8:00 PM
Already unlocked? for access

La Cava castle is located on the hill of little Aronas in Aglantzia. It was built during the Francocracy period in 1385 AD by King James I of Cyprus. During that period, the castle was considered very important in the political life of the Kingdom and played an important economic and defensive role, especially in overseeing the Nicosia-Larnaca trade route. Although the castle had great potential for predominance, it was destroyed for the first time during the invasion of the Mamluks in 1426. However, the complete destruction of the castle was the result of the decision to remove a large amount of stones for the construction of the church of Faneromeni. Nowadays, the castle is not in use and is not well known to the general public, due to the existence of a military outpost in that location, while access without permission is not possible. Our hope as a team is that the castle’s cultural value will be highlighted and that it will be used for educational and artistic purposes in the future.
