The Salt Lakes of Larnaca, a distinctive geomorphological phenomenon , are included in a List of wetlands of international importance and are protected by International convention. Since their formation the Lakes have been used for salt harvesting, thus providing Cyprus with wealth. Specifically, throughout Medieval Ages, Cyprus exported salt in huge amounts. The locals and Venetian administration attributed salt destruction by floods to the fact that for a number of years Saint Lazarus church had fallen into disrepair. Alyki salt was of excellent quality. Salt is a useful element in nutrition and food preservation, in fodder production and in manufacturing, in water chlorination and water-softening. The same factors that threaten the Salt Lakes ecosystem caused in 1986 the salt production to stop due to molybdate pollution. Is the damage irreparable? Larnaca Municipality makes a lot of efforts to restore and decontaminate the Salt Lakes ecosystem. Decontamination of the soil and waters must be achieved in order to harvest salt from Alyki again.
