In 1921, Tulsa’s Greenwood district — a historic center of Black wealth in the city — burned to the ground while a mob murdered hundreds of Black citizens during one of America’s most violent racial conflicts. One hundred years later, the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma begins to reckon with its history as it searches for an unmarked, mass grave. The Washington Post journalist DeNee Brown returns to her native state to contextualize and understand today’s revived call for racial justice against this tragic backdrop. Brown interviews family members of those killed in the massacre, city officials, historians and archeologists to seek the truth and healing about the mob violence. Directed by AFI DOCS 2021 Guggenheim honoree Dawn Porter, RISE AGAIN: TULSA AND THE RED SUMMER is a story of Black resistance and the truths suppressed for decades.
