It's August of 1994 in the small coastal town of Gibara, Cuba, and Carlos is trying to make the most of the last few weeks of summer vacation. At home with his parents and grandmother, the high schooler is not prepared for the end of the euphemistically named Período Especial (special period in time of peace) in which he is living. This decade-long economic depression will see a massive wave of migration from the island to the U.S., known as the balseros (rafters) crisis. Living through a few years of the depression has hit Carlos and his family hard, but he continues to enjoy his relatively carefree youth with friendships and summer romances until, one by one, those closest to him begin to disappear in the night in search of a better life. This naturalistic coming-of-age story borrows heavily from first-time director Armando Capó's memories of his own youth in Cuba, and uses a mix of professional and non-professional actors to capture the tranquility during the turmoil that changed the lives of so many, including his. Official Selection, 2019 Toronto, Mill Valley and Chicago film festivals. DIR/SCR Armando Capó; SCR Abel Arcos; PROD Marcela Esquivel Jiménez. Cuba/Costa Rica/France, 2019, color, 85 min.
