Inspired by true events, this film tells the story of a free-spirited young girl named Subira, who lives on the island of Lamu, Kenya. Her fisherman father takes her with him on his fishing expeditions and opens her young mind to a world of possibilities that extends beyond the single role that her strict Islamic culture has consigned to her as a woman: marriage. When her father dies and her mother arranges her to marry the son of a wealthy Nairobi family, she refuses to give up her dream of learning to swim. The film portrays her small but resolute rebellion to live her life on her own terms.
