Join us at 5:30p on FB and IG Live for the unveiling of Her Flowers.

Her Flowers is a mural project commissioned by Afrikana Independent Film Festival and is designed to be a way for us, collectively, to honor the Black women who have lost their lives to police brutality in the United States. This four-sided free-standing mural, painted by a collective of Black male artists rooted in Richmond, VA, holds the names of 120 women whose lives were taken away from 1985 to the present. We know there are more whose stories will never be told, but through this work we hold space for all those women - both known and unknown - and the people who love them.

We have also carved out a deliberate space for the community to add names of the women they want to give their flowers while they are still alive and well. Black lives have value and deserve to be honored not only in death but while they are still in full bloom.

Afrikana appreciates the brothers who have come together to craft this work, knowing that it is the responsibility of all of us, but especially Black men, to hold reverent and protective space for Black women in the here-and-now and the hereafter.

This project is made possible by the Eggleston Family and Sugar’s Crab Shack.

Mural will be on view in the garden of The Valentine through 12.31.2020
