History is not the past, it is the present. We carry our history with us.

We are our history.

– James Baldwin

Inspired by Quickdraw Animation Society’s (QAS) On LGBTQ2S+ Animation Project*, this panel features special guests Mike Hooves, founding member of the project’s organizing collective, award-winning Toronto queer artists Lauren Hortie and Sonya Reynolds, and Daniel SterlinAltman, Canadian stop-motion animator, currently based in Germany.

Together we discuss: Why the need for an archive of animated queer films? Can animation document as well as live action? Does animation tell stories differently? In what ways do queer archives disrupt society’s accepted narrative?

The panel is moderated by Sam Decoste, independent animator and one of the essayists for On LGBTQ2S+ Animation. Check out selected auto/biographical animations on here.

*On LGBTQ2S+ Animation is a collection of essays, comics, and other works exploring queerness, identity and representation in animation. A digital version is available here. A limited number of free print copies are available from Venus Envy, 1598 Barrington Street Halifax.

This program is co-presented as part of Mayworks.
