Directed by Nanfu Wang (One Child Nation), In the Same Breath recounts the origin and spread of the novel coronavirus from the earliest days of the outbreak in Wuhan to its rampage across the United States. In a deeply personal approach, Wang, who was born in China and now lives in the United States, explores the parallel campaigns of misinformation waged by leadership and the devastating impact on citizens of both countries.

Emotional first-hand accounts and startling, on-the-ground footage weave a revelatory picture of cover-ups and misinformation while highlighting the strength of the healthcare workers, activists, and family members who risked everything to communicate the truth. (APRIL 16)

Director’s Statement: Nanfu Wang

My family lives a few hours away from Wuhan, so when the lockdown started, I did a lot of research to assess the severity of the outbreak. I realized quickly that there was a huge discrepancy between what was actually happening and what the Chinese government was telling the world. But the real surprise came in the months that followed when I saw a mirror version of China’s outbreak—and the government’s efforts to downplay it —play out in my home in the U.S. Making this film allowed me to see the striking similarities between these two supposedly different countries.

Selected Filmography: Hooligan Sparrow, I Am Another You, One Child Nation
