Forty centuries ago, ancient natives left their mark on the landscape of coastal South Carolina. Today, archaeologists from SCDNR, a dozen universities and the National Park Service search for clues to our earliest known coastal dwellers.

The story takes viewers to remote sites as scientists discover the ancient South Carolinians who built monumental rings of shell.

Perhaps our best clue to who they were is the many rings of shell they left behind. Whether the shells were placed deliberately or merely discarded into a midden is unknown, but “The Ring People” visits these rings, along with other remote sites, as scientists strive to understand more about these people and their place in our story.
