FILM SYNOPSIS: Ladakh is an Indian region that is facing a deep process of transformation and cultural regeneration, constantly oscillating between its vocation of being a land of arcane and mystical traditions, and an uncontrolled progress that is destructive for the environment and is alienating its inhabitants.
Brave and visionary minds are however working to overcome this dualism by proposing a virtuous mediation: preserving their identity without withdrawing into a shell, giving value to the incentives of a modernity that does not imply an anthropological mutation.
Can we, as westerners, learn from this social, economical and cultural lab that is today Ladakh?
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: After his film studies in New York, Nicolò Bongiorno began his professional career writing, producing and directing very personal travel diaries, followed by award-winning documentary films of the trilogy 3 Human Adventures , the ascent of the Matterhorn, 2015, the underwater scientific expedition of The Lions of Lissa, 2019, internationally recognized in festivals around the world.
Songs of the Water Spirits is the result of 3 years of field work in the Kashmiri Himalayas, in an attempt to tell the challenge of a "laboratory" society set among the high desert and some of the most spectacular and highest peaks in the world, overwhelmed by the impact of climate change, and in search of a "new" way towards an "ancient future".
