FILM SYNOPSIS:

Who Will Sing For Me? is a documentary about the demise of the Beothuk culture on the island of Newfoundland (Canada), an artist, a vision, and a bronze statue that will last a thousand years.

“Who will Sing For Me? is a technically accomplished, pointedly political, completely absorbing account of Gerald Squires’ 1987 vision of Shanawdithit, so-called last of the Beothuk, and the fascinating process by which that vision became the statue honouring her as representative of a people tragically lost to colonial expansion."

[Stan Dragland, Canadian literary critic and author of an art/career retrospective of the artist who created the Spirit of the Beothuk statue.]

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR:

Who Will Sing For Me? was produced and directed by Roger Bill and Tristram Clark. The project happened by chance. It began one day when the journalist and videographer team visited the studio of an artist. The artist told them about a vision he had and how he felt compelled capture it.

For the artist his project took four years to complete. For the documentary makers Who Will Sing For Me? took 20 years to complete. Like the creation of the statue, despite all of the obstacles it encountered the documentary demanded to be finished.

Roger Bill is a veteran journalist and online video producer from Canada, a Freelance reporter and commentator on NL political affairs for Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Newfoundland and Labrador, NL print publications, and iPolitics.ca.
