SYNOPSIS
Cultural heritage in conflict territories often falls victim to the effects of embedded political, ideological and religious divisions.
In Kazafani / Ozanköy [trans: 'the village of the poets'] on the Pentadaktylos foothills of Cyprus however, the small Venetian-era church of Panagia tou Potamou bears testimony to how much can be achieved when members of the post-conflict local community, acting on their own initiative and at their own expense, join together to protect their village heritage.
Their efforts, over approximately five decades, serve as a dignified and optimistic reminder of the shared importance of cultural heritage on a localized scale and reiterates its centrality at the heart of this historic Cypriot village.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Dan Frodsham is an independent documentary-maker with a background in journalism and television. Over the last fifteen years, he has made a series of films about the churches of Cyprus and their wall paintings, working with Prof. Michael J.K. Walsh, who instigated and led a remarkably successful campaign to reintroduce art conservation and scholarship to the disputed territories of the north of Cyprus. This work, and the films that chart it, has been supported over the years by Nanyang Technological University and the World Monuments Fund.
Michael J K Walsh is Professor of Art History at Savannah College of Art and Design. He successfully nominated the historic Cypriot city of Famagusta for inclusion in the World Monuments Fund Watch List of Endangered Heritage Sites (2008 and 2010), then went on to organize four international conferences on the history, art and architecture of Famagusta; Paris [2008], Budapest [2012], Bern [2014] and Padua [2017]. These meetings led to five books, eight book chapters, and sixteen journal articles published internationally. He has worked with Dan Frodsham on several other films on Cypriot heritage including The Forty: Saving Famagusta’s Forgotten Frescoes [2012]) and Prayers Long Silent [2017].
