After an absence of 50 years, and in a context of postwar reconstruction, the return of archaeologists to the major sites of Iraq is ushering in a new era in the archaeology of Mesopotamia.

The technical resources and new approaches available to this generation of researchers enable them to shed new light on the emergence and development of the first cities, while at the same time working to preserve the region’s heritage.
