In a small town in Illinois, Thomas Mitchell, a middle-aged, lonely, depressed man wakes up with the hopes of finding joy on Christmas Day. His morning routine typically begins with an antidepressant medication followed by a brief moment of staring at a picture of his wife and coping with his loss. He strives to transform his grief into joy, using the power of his five senses. Thomas gets out of bed and heads towards his wife’s robe hanging nearby. As he begins to touch the soft cloth, he immediately feels her spirit. He goes about his day, preparing the Christmas dinner he’s been craving. Later that evening, Thomas lights the candles on the dinner table and pours red wine into 2 glasses. Alone, he raises his glass towards the other, takes a swishing sip, and tastes the red wine. Entering a timeline of his past, he’s embraced by a sweet flashback of him and his wife enjoying wine over Christmas dinner. Returning from his flashback, he heads over to his cozy living room elaborate with Christmas decorations. He picks up an antique bottle of perfume and sprays it over his Christmas village and figurines. He inhales the fragrant deeply and slowly, and the perfume scent triggers another flashback with his wife. The recollection of memories gives Thomas a feeling of comfort, however they are short-lived. He carefully looks at the village décor pieces and smiles. Each village piece represents a visual of his past with his wife and triggers nostalgia. Finally, he travels across the mantle all the way to the very last village piece-the ballroom. He closes his eyes and abruptly goes towards the record player, realizing that something is missing. As he starts the turntable, he closes his eyes and instantly enters a new world. Thomas starts to hear footsteps behind him. He turns around and sees his beautiful wife. His shock transitions into tears of joy. At last, the sound of music completes the final stimulation of all five senses! He is now feeling the full presence of his wife, as they dance into the night under “Carol of the Bells”.
