Give as a gift
In the frozen heights of Canada’s tallest peak, an international team of scientists launches a daring expedition to unearth thousands of years of climate data in one record-breaking ice core. The sample is an invaluable piece of the global climate puzzle. And the seven experts, with their scientific genius, physical strength, and high-alpine survival skills, are some of the only people in the world who can complete this month-long mission.
Ice core scientist and National Geographic Explorer Alison Criscitiello is the brain and brawn behind this ambitious quest. As she leads her team on a 10-day climb up the mountain, through whiteout conditions and precarious icefalls, a highly contagious stomach virus and life-threatening altitude sickness force multiple emergency evacuations. Defeating the odds, Ali and her remaining teammates reach Mt. Logan’s summit plateau and camp for 16 days while they drill, endure sub-zero temperatures, and finally bring home the deepest non-polar ice core ever collected.
Throughout this perilous journey we discover how Ali’s life back home drives her to do this work and take such risks. She carries everything with her to the mountains, including the hope that her 3-year-old daughter Winter will learn through her example and believe that she too can do anything - even what seems impossible. The global climate crisis looms over Winter’s generation and Ali knows that they’ll need to work harder and solve problems faster to preserve the planet she loves. Because of this, Ali brings every skill and unique talent she possesses to one of the most inhospitable places on earth to secure ice core data and equip future generations with the tools they need to fight this mammoth fight.
