Hidden in a van, 9-year-old Roman crosses the border from Ukraine to Germany to be with his mother, Oksana. But Oksana is not alone. She lives with Gert, a 62-year-old widower, working illegally as his caretaker. But when Oksana’s health takes a turn, Gert is forced to leave her, without papers. To escape investigation, he moves to the countryside and takes temporary care of Roman, who finds himself trapped in a remote forest. Though Gert had become a rival for his mother’s attention, Roman is completely dependent on the widower when outrageous misfortune strikes again.
