The Black Zone highlights the ongoing courageous work of the Karen backpack medics who provide the only form of healthcare to many in their community. These medics work in the war-torn "black zone" -- an area demarcated by the Burmese military regime as a region loosely controlled by the Karen in eastern Burma. The Burmese military blocks medical and humanitarian aid into the "black zone" forcing the medics to travel clandestinely. Nevertheless, thousands rely on them to treat everything from the deadliest drug-resistant form of malaria to landmine injuries -- often without electricity or running water.
