Profits from forests and extractive industries, including oil and gas, are a major source of revenue for the Myanmar military. Panelists will discuss the military’s control of, and commercial gain from, the country's vast natural resources. They will discuss the mechanisms used by civil society groups and the ethnic communities to monitor the junta’s commercial trade of these resources, and to document the resulting human rights abuses. The panelists will outline what the EU and the international community can do to combat these wide scale abuses and exploitation of natural resources, and to support the communities struggling to protect themselves and their land.
