Two undocumented Latina mothers spend years in sanctuary in church basements on Colorado’s front range, evading deportation and protecting their families. Their lives are dictated by timelines outside their control: the state’s race for governor, the COVID-19 pandemic, the shrinking number of days until impending deportation deadlines, and the growing number–631, 806, 1307–spent cut off from the outside world. SI PUDIERA QUEDARME / IF I COULD STAY unpacks the challenges of sanctuary, which is both a spiritual and political act, through the eyes of two women calling on the deep courage needed to inhabit it.
