The production of jeans dominates the manufacturing landscape of Toritama, Brazil. Workers labor for more than 14 hours a day in many cases, and workshop spaces sprawl into backyards and even onto the city’s sidewalks. But as demanding as their work is, they are assured of one major respite: the anticipation of Carnaval is a constant, marking the passage of time and a guarantee of restorative rest.
