With sumptuous colors, trippy visuals, and fourth-wall breaks, these shorts reimagine our built environments. As time warps and bits of the past bleed into the present, from Soviet buildings to Italian cinema, these films ricochet between nostalgia and haunting.

Rodas is an audiovisual project reflecting on the contemporary meaning of cohabitation. Poetics of the domestic formed with humor, magic and irony, articulating different moments of everyday life in a contemporary urban context. Casa Rodas, projected by CIOestudio, is adaptable and progressive, capable of accommodating a great variety of uses with small variations, different ways of living and co-living. As a shared house the relationship between the public and private is central to the organization of the space. The shifting limit where the two meet reflects the relationship between its users.

Letters from the Middle-Ground is an architectural response to the postcolonial concept of "cultural hybridity" through a syncretism of British and Indian cultures. The film tells the story of the search for a spatial language, depicting the migrant’s experience of being rooted in many places at once. The project is located at the Prime Meridian line in Greenwich, a landmark described as both the centre of world time, but also a political decision that labelled the East as "other." The building deconstructs this line; it is a poetic antithesis to a world divided in two halves, creating a fertile third space where cultural hybridity is unleashed. Given the abstract and undefined nature of hybridity, the building is shown in constant transition. The film’s protagonist experiments with different typologies of imagined hybrid spaces – spatially illustrating architectures that reference historical Indian architectural motifs and miniature paintings. The resulting architecture is a hybrid of Britain and India, the past and present, the real and imagined.

What does a building look like on the verge of demolition? Typically, there is no fanfare. Some, however, peek through the tiny metal meshes while the wrecking ball gets its due and wonder what was. The structure of 888 Dupont has had many functions throughout the years. Once, it was a broom factory for disabled veterans. At its most recent iteration, it served as an oasis for artists over many decades. Its future looks more mundane and typical: glass-clad condominiums. When a building with a history of community, opportunity and creativity is slated for the chopping block, does it make a sound? What would this building say to us if given the chance?

A documentary-dance film that explores the legacy of Soviet architecture in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Moving fluidly between interview and dance, the film playfully investigates the dynamic impact that these buildings have on the people who live with them. What should be done with them? Should they be preserved, destroyed, repurposed? Since this film was shot, Russia has invaded Ukraine, and Kharkiv is now being shelled. Now, it serves as a snapshot of an independent, hopeful Ukraine trying to find its feet, at a time when that independence has never been more fragile.
