INTRODUCING CIFF LOVE LETTERS: Valentines day has come early! We’ve thought a lot this year about how we can build connections between audience members and filmmakers within a virtual space. One of the hardest things about this year for filmmakers, is that they have not been able to forge spontaneous connections with audiences and hear from them directly. Night, like mourning, remakes space through absence: forms at the threshold of perception heighten sound and touch. When someone dies there is a pull towards the concrete and tangible, but disbelief creates a world of unreliable objects. Figure Minus Fact draws and redraws coordinates between spaces, senses, and objects, groping in the dark, desiring to see something that’s not there. Spaces become evidentiary yet deceptive in a subjectless portrait of loss.

The Metamorphosis of Birds&nbsp;will screen virtually from October 2-12, 2020. This film will be only available to viewers in the Northeast. A boy dreams of becoming a bird, first loves are found and lost, and leaves fall faithfully with the seasons in this multigenerational story of love and the sea. Letters between husband and wife whisper of things that grow or wither while we’re away, like children and houseplants. Beatriz raises six children with an appetite for mischief and mystery while her husband sails back and forth across the Atlantic to Portugal’s colonies. Vinyl records that capture missed birthdays and recitals that reverberate like tree rings, marking the years of drought and heat, scars and decay. Unmoored and mourning, each child develops like a shoot, darting off in their own direction, searching for light. A deeply personal, exquisite debut film, Vasconcelos pays homage to tenacious motherhood and takes a radical approach to family history. Beatriz married Henrique on the day of her 21st birthday. Henrique, a naval officer, would spend long periods at sea. Ashore, Beatriz, who learned everything from the verticality of plants, took great care of the roots of their six children. The oldest son, Jacinto (Hyacinth), my father, dreamed he could be a bird. One day, suddenly, Beatriz died. My mom didn’t die suddenly, but she too died when I was 17 years-old. On that day, me and my father met in the loss of our mothers and our relationship was no longer just that of father and daughter.
