INTRODUCING CIFF LOVE LETTERS: Valentines day has come early! We’ve thought a lot this year about how we can build connections between audience members and filmmakers within a virtual space. One of the hardest things about this year for filmmakers, is that they have not been able to forge spontaneous connections with audiences and hear from them directly. Utuqaq is a sci-fi poem set in the Arctic. On its vast lunar landscape, the protagonist is Ice. Five visitors arrive one spring to camp on the ice sheet.

In the Yukon, what was once an important natural resource and grazing site for the region’s indigenous peoples and their caribou, sheep, and wild game is transformed when a white man arrives in search of gold.&nbsp;Generations of the human hand’s effect on land can now be seen from above. Thousands came north seeking freedom, fortune, and to live in a vast and breathtaking mountain landscape. It was a land with no rules, rich with possibility, and an adventure ordained by God. They came for a place to belong, and to finally be alone. NORTH tells the story of this Canadian territory in a poetic but nonetheless confronting way. Years of intensive mining have inflicted immeasurable damage on the landscape. Today, a vicious, lonely wind whips through canyons that open into valleys dotted with sun dappled lakes full of ruddy water and glinting tributaries that flow down from the mountains with poison in their veins. Its inhabitants slip like glaciers through memory and time, constantly moving forward under their own weight until they become vapor. (JA)&nbsp;Plays with UTUQAQ, directed by Iva Radivojevic.
