INTRODUCING CIFF LOVE LETTERS: Valentines day has come early! We’ve thought a lot this year about how we can build connections between audience members and filmmakers within a virtual space. One of the hardest things about this year for filmmakers, is that they have not been able to forge spontaneous connections with audiences and hear from them directly. Kenneth Copp is a furniture maker form rural Maine who spent his life in old-order Amish communities. But when he began to question his faith, Kenneth was shunned from the church, unable to communicate with his family or do business with his neighbors. Despite the ensuing hardship, Kenneth has been able to persevere, driven by a quest for greater understanding about what it means to live in accordance with your beliefs.

A lyrical portrait of an excommunicated Amish woodworker struggling with spirituality, poverty, and life as an outcast from his strict, insular community.

This Land, Our Voices will screen virtually from October 2-12, 2020. An experimental documentary profiling five rural American outsiders. From the high plains of Montana to the Black Belt of Alabama, THIS LAND, OUR VOICES is an impressionistic view of the nation in microcosm and transition. This dreamy journey back to the land, considered precious, beautiful, and sacred to so many, is also fraught with a gruesome colonial and racist history. The multigenerational ranch owners cannot exist without the landless ranch hands, the displaced indigenous communities, the rural disenfranchised poor, and “the forgotten side” of everytown, USA. The characters we meet each thoughtfully consider the meaning of ownership, self-possession, and land stewardship within their own life and the larger legacy that they are shaping for themselves and their communities. Artists Thomspon and Bay sought to tell stories from the land that reflect the diversity and strength of the American population and unite the quiet beauty of observational documentary film with the poetic American landscape, unscored with the ambient struggle for meaning and representation in the lives of America’s unfilmed.&nbsp;(JA)
