INTRODUCING CIFF LOVE LETTERS: Valentines day has come early! We’ve thought a lot this year about how we can build connections between audience members and filmmakers within a virtual space. One of the hardest things about this year for filmmakers, is that they have not been able to forge spontaneous connections with audiences and hear from them directly. If you’ve seen a film you have loved, click HERE to write a love letter to a filmmaker!

Bottled Songs 1-4 will screen virtually from October 2-12, 2020.

How do we make sense of terror? Exchanging video letters recorded across oceans and from their computer desktops, filmmakers and media researchers Chloé Galibert-Laîné and Kevin B. Lee reflect on the nature of social media and the limits of journalism in an increasingly fractious online environment. BOTTLED SONGS is an ongoing media project depicting strategies for making sense of online terrorist propaganda. In a distinctive act of self-reflexive viewing and image-making, the artists narrate their encounters with videos originating from the terrorist group the Islamic State (ISIS) and explore the techniques and production of recruitment videos designed to mimic the tropes of Hollywood action blockbusters and viral videos. Employing the desktop documentary approach to trace and record their investigations, the videos, notes to self, and letters play directly upon the artists’ computer screens, a microcosm of one’s internal life and worldview. The writing of the letters is visualized on separate screens, to create a space of critical reflection in counterpoint to images of violence and terror. (JA)
