INTRODUCING CIFF LOVE LETTERS: Valentines day has come early! We’ve thought a lot this year about how we can build connections between audience members and filmmakers within a virtual space. One of the hardest things about this year for filmmakers, is that they have not been able to forge spontaneous connections with audiences and hear from them directly. Sounds of Summer is a visual poem that celebrates and amplifies the soundscapes that mark this definitive period of time when kids are out of school, shorts and flips flops dot the sidewalks and people want nothing else but to be outside. Although we could not gather in our usual ways this summer, Sounds of Summer reminds us of the humanity and community that exists all around us.

Sounds of Summer

An homage to the communal spaces frequented during summer. The spare images synchronized with sounds of people adds to the illusion of movement and life.

A lyrical portrait of an excommunicated Amish woodworker struggling with spirituality, poverty, and life as an outcast from his strict, insular community.

Utuqaq is a sci-fi poem set in the Arctic. On its vast lunar landscape, the protagonist is Ice. Five visitors arrive one spring to camp on the ice sheet.

Every weekday, inmates are released from Huntsville Penitentiary, taking in their first moments out with phone calls, cigarettes, and reflection at the nearby Greyhound station.
