If cinema is “sculpting in time”, as the Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky described it, then it offers a unique language with which to express one of the great ruptures between past and present: the loss of a loved one and the grief that follows. Two films in the CIFF program — Katrine Philp’s BEAUTIFUL SOMETHING LEFT BEHIND and Zeshawn Ali’s TWO GODS — offer meditations on this mysterious threshold between life and death and the innate search for meaning that accompanies loss. They are joined by Kirsten Johnson, director of DICK JOHNSON IS DEAD (launching October 2 on Netflix), to discuss their distinct approaches to the cinematic representation of a profound emotional experience.
