At the 2019 CIFF, we focused our film and forum programming on the theme Story & Power -- an effort to examine the ways in which deeply-embedded power structures have shaped the documentary field, including which stories are told, by whom, and for whom.

Against the backdrop of 2020's crises, these industry-wide conversations have reached a point of reckoning. How can we ensure that power, resources and opportunities are shared equitably in the documentary field, particularly at a moment when the major distribution platforms wield more power than ever?

Concordia Studio Fellowships brings a unique perspective to this question, offering both strategic career advancement for diverse US artists and backing for some of the most vital and vigorous voices in nonfiction today, including the CIFF opener, Garret Bradley's TIME.

In this conversation, Concordia's Rahdi Taylor and two Artists-in-Residence with films in the CIFF program -- Garrett Bradley (TIME) and Heather Rae (PAULETTE) -- discuss how they've approached building a career and navigating the power dynamics of the film industry while staying true to their artistic visions.
