Sinn Féin politician and peace negotiator Martin McGuinness was a controversial figure who divided opinion, but he was also a skilled mediator who brought people together. This new feature documentary traces McGuinness' life from his early days as an IRA commander to his time defending the Northern Ireland peace process. McGuinness was a public figure for more than 40 years. He started as a revolutionary, then became a politician, eventually going on to hold the office of Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland for almost a decade. We hear testimonies from friends, opponents, colleagues and Martin himself, as we trace his unique and eventful life. Childhood friends recount stories of living in Derry during the 1960s and '70s. McGuinness' colleagues from Sinn Féin tell stories of working with him, and how he steered the party in the North toward the peace that exists today. Johnathan Powell, the Labour Party Negotiator, recalls McGuinness' unique ability to get people to engage and fight on his side. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair remarks on the strong sense of duty McGuinness had toward the people of Ireland. Also included in the film is McGuinness' last interview before his death in 2017. This bilingual, Irish/English language film gives a rare insight into one man's incredible journey of helping bring peace and a representative government to this troubled corner of Ireland.
