Accompanied by hauntingly beautiful Malagasy music and chants, Morning Star is about two local interdependent communities in the southwestern part of Madagascar, one a fishing community and the other a forest community, whose livelihoods and culture are threatened by powerful outside foreign interests. A huge Australian company, Base Toliara, is preparing to mine their precious land for “the best mineral sand in the world.” The locals are unified in their opposition to the mining operation and organize to strike against it. Woven throughout the film are scenes of their village life and their customs and traditions. In Malagasy with English subtitles.
