BURDEN

The short film HUMAN plays before the feature.

The perfect story for our times and the true story of a man's exodus from the Ku Klux Klan.

When Ku Klux Klansman Mike Burden (Garrett Hedlund) opens the Redneck Shop and KKK Museum in historic Laurens, South Carolina, life is about as good as it gets. Little does he realize how it will come crumbling down. In the midst of the repossession of a TV, he falls in love with a single mom (Andrea Riseborough) and, under her influence, quits the Klan before the vengeful eyes of his father. Taken in by an idealistic African American reverend (Forest Whitaker), Burden is forced to confront his history of violence and disavow his racist past—just as any good country should.

Starring Garrett Hedlund, Andrea Riseborough, and Forest Whitaker.

This film has been generously sponsored by Trish and John McCarthy; by Carolyn Niesman; and by Happy Fowler and Bert Phillips.

At Crested Butte Film Festival we believe that film can change lives. Every year we strive to create opportunities for participants to learn and have the opportunity to act during the festival. To accompany our panel “An Unusual Route: Dialogues Around Systemic Representations” and the films exploring race in America, we’ve developed a list of resources to support your journey toward anti-racism. This is not comprehensive by any means, but we hope this helps.
