Gabriel lives a happy life in Burundi with his younger sister, his French father and his Rwandan mother. He goes to school and plays with his best friends. But this will end sooner than he realizes. Not long after his parents decide to divorce, the civil war starts in Burundi and the Tutsi genocide takes place in Rwanda, shattering Gabriel’s world as he knows it. Face to face with the violence around him, Gabriel will have to respond, make difficult choices and grow up far too quickly. Adapted from the novel written by French-Rwandan Gaël Faye, it’s a glimpse into the horror that took place in the 1990s from the perspective of a pre-teen trying to understand how the world can be so senselessly and violently torn apart and into the shared dream of refugees wishing to return to their country one day.
