The Girl with the Accent

Leaving Ethiopia at a time of great strife, the narrator recounts her experiences as an immigrant in America. It can be difficult fitting in, learning a new language, and attempting to assimilate while also retaining one's own roots. Looking back as a mother with children, the narrator now has to consider the implications of raising a Black child in America, a country dealing with racism and systemic oppression through its institutions.
