Using an approach much like 2021’s critically acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated “Flee,” this animated documentary links three poetic immigrant stories: a young activist fights for her undocumented father, two sisters born on different sides of the Mexico/U.S. border, and a harrowing tale of deportation. —M.G.

Living under the constant threat of deportation is a stark reality many Mexican-American families must endure. And while all family members may not be American citizens, this country is the only home they have known together. In the visually imaginative animated documentary, HOME IS SOMEWHERE ELSE, we hear three separate firsthand accounts from families torn apart by the U.S. immigration system. In the first chapter, 11-year-old Jasmine is the only American citizen in her family, and she fears being separated from her undocumented parents. In the second, Evelyn and Elizabeth are sisters on opposite sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. And in the third and final chapter, José Eduardo recounts his story of growing up in Utah and then suddenly being deported as a young adult, completely torn from the life he’s built for himself. Powerful and poignant, this film illuminates the personal stories behind the numbers and statistics we so often hear when it comes to undocumented migrants. —G.S.
