Vienna, early 1980s. Perla is a strong-willed and self-assured immigrant single mother and an up-and-coming artist, renowned for her bold and expressive paintings. She has built a new life for herself and her talented musician daughter in Austria, living a stable life with her older local partner. However, an unexpected phone call from communist Czechoslovakia brings back memories of her previous life and threatens to damage the fragile world she has created for herself. The story follows Perla, a single mother and artist who fled communist Czechoslovakia to build a new life in Vienna. An intimate character study meets Iron Curtain melodrama. Visually stunning and anchored by an outstanding central performance, Perla tells an emotionally gripping story of survival, sacrifice, difficult personal choices, and their consequences. Can one ever escape one’s anxiously buried past?
