Somewhere in the hills of central Slovakia lives a family of village sluggards. Three lazy brothers, who bear names reminiscent of One Hundred Years of Solitude, drift through life, lost in naivety, boredom and their own foolishness. Around them, a world unfolds where reality mingles with the spirits of their ancestors and a multitude of chimeras, dreams and fantasies. The only thing that gives their existence meaning are the fateful women who are fearless enough to risk, and even sacrifice, their lives for love.

Loosely inspired by the classic Slovak novella “Ťapákovci” (a staple of the school curriculum), the film is not a simple retelling but a vivid, magical-realist reimagining of the book. With humour, poetry and a sense of the grotesque, Sluggard Clan probes what its director calls “the soul of the nation”. It´s a boundary-blurring and unbridled exploration of Slovak identity.
