Inspired by true events, Cat’s Cry is a moving intergenerational drama that explores family ties, loss and resilience against the backdrop of a society in transition. Milena, a young woman longing for freedom and recognition, finds her dreams shattered when she gives birth to a child with “Cat’s Cry Syndrome”. Abandoned by her partner and overwhelmed by fear of the future, she disappears, leaving her father Stamen and his new wife Vera to fight for custody of the vulnerable child. Through intimate storytelling and layered performances, Živković paints a portrait of love and responsibility tested by personal and systemic failures. The film navigates themes of parenthood, dignity and survival within a small industrial town where individual choices collide with entrenched social structures. Both tender and uncompromising, Cat’s Cry reveals how fragile yet powerful family bonds can be when faced with abandonment, stigma and the flawed mechanisms of state care.
