Peter Bebjak’s biopic celebrates the “Czechoslovak Tom Jones,” Slovak chanson singer Karol Duchoň, tracing his rise from a middle-class upbringing to national stardom. Vladislav Plevčík in the title role perfectly captures the pop singer’s look and gestures with remarkable precision, bringing both his music and the era vividly to life. The film weaves musical performances, private moments and retrospective storytelling in a seamless, collage-like style. With opulent production design, meticulously detailed sets and period-accurate costumes, it immerses viewers in the 1970s and 80s, offering a visually elegant tribute to a half-forgotten artist. It reflects on the Normalization times without judgment yet with subtle irony, reversing the usual “star is born” narrative to bring to life a “man without qualities” of the socialist pop culture industry.
