This boldly original documentary about Czech photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková (sometimes dubbed the “Czech Nan Goldin”) transforms decades of photographs and diary entries into a fascinating cinematic self-portrait. Spanning 1970–1989, it traces her life between Prague, Tokyo and Berlin, exploring love, work, freedom and alienation under late socialism and beyond. Through an evocative slideshow of images—at once intimate and political—her voice leads us across moments of joy, despair, and resilience. Enhanced by contemporary sound design, the film animates still photographs into living fragments of memory, resisting nostalgia while embracing the raw immediacy of experience. Both personal and universal, it stands as a testament to an uncompromising artist who lived and created in perpetual tension between belonging and independence. I'm Not Everything I Want to Be has been selected as the Czech entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards.
